What do you need to begin your flight training journey? We’ve compiled some resources for you.
Basic Requirements
After 9/11/01, some security requirements were established for all aspiring pilots. So, to get started, you need to bring one of the following bullet-pointed lists of items to your instructor for the first lesson:
- A valid, unexpired US Passport
- An original government issued US birth certificate AND a government issued picture ID
- An original certificate of birth abroad with raised seal AND a government issued picture ID
- An original certificate of US citizenship with raised seal or a Certificate of Repatriation AND a government issued picture ID
- An original US Naturalization Certificate with raised seal AND a government issued picture ID.
If you are a foreign national, TSA’s Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP) will need to validate your eligibility for flight training. If you are in this category, please click here for more information.
Once you have these documents, meet with your instructor and start flying! When you have begun your flight training, we can help you initiate the process of obtaining the following:
- A medical certificate (at least a third class for private pilots)
- A student pilot certificate
You don’t need to have these in hand before you start learning to fly, but you will need them before you fly solo, so the sooner you have them, the better! Keep in mind that a medical certificate is not needed for a Sport Pilot certificate. There is a simple medical clearance required, but generally speaking, if you have a drivers license, you should be able to become a Sport Pilot.
If you have met all these requirements and are ready to fly, or are already a pilot, please take a look at these documents:
