Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to help you navigate your flight training journey.

Training time varies by student, but most pilots earn their certificate in 40–70 hours of flight training with an instructor. Total cost depends on how often you fly, the aircraft you train in, and your study habits. On average, students can expect a range that reflects both flight time and ground instruction. Flying consistently helps keep training efficient and costs lower.

Sport Pilot is the quickest and most affordable way to get in the air. You’ll fly during daylight hours and keep things simple with fewer training requirements. It’s perfect for recreational flyers who want a fun, streamlined path to flying.

Private Pilot offers the most flexibility. You can fly larger aircraft, carry more passengers, fly at night, and operate in controlled airspace. It requires more training but opens the door to additional ratings and long-term aviation goals.

Both are great options. Your choice depends on how far you want your flying to take you.

You’ll schedule your FAA knowledge test through PSI, the FAA’s official testing provider. After creating an account and entering your FAA Tracking Number (FTN), you can choose a testing center in Indiana, pick a date, and pay the exam fee. Most FAA knowledge tests cost about $175.

You’ll begin your medical certificate application online through MedXPress.FAA.gov. After completing the form, schedule an appointment with an FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). At your visit, the examiner will review your application, complete your exam, and issue your medical certificate.
